A few days ago, a few of my friends went out in to Grantham for a bite to
eat. We went to this new restaurant and I must admit, the choice on the menu
was vast .. we had something different, and frankly .. it was all a bit
rubbish. It made me think of my favourite restaurant that only has five things
on the menu, but each is truly magnificent. Just as the restaurant that makes
the menu longer instead of figuring out how to make even one dish worth travelling
across town for, you Valuers (be it lettings or estate agency), add many pages
to your presentation pitch at appraisal, we add ten or twenty comparables to
our folder, we add twenty sheets into folder that we will leave after the appraisal
on all our services our agency offers. We confuse variety and range with
quality.
Working hard is not the answer here. Working hard, alone doesn't produce work that matters. No, that only comes from caring. From caring enough to jump, to go the extra mile, to go to the edge, where it's dangerous. When we care enough, we raise the game, not just for ourselves, but for our landlords (and tenants), our colleagues and our partners.
It's much easier to add some extra’s, increase your network, stuff extra leaflets in the appraisal pack, deliver 100 more leaflets than your colleague, get some bullet pointed jobs done that will keep your branch manager, area manager or director happy. Who wants to feel failure? You won’t if you do that those things .. but will it make it any better .. will it make you better .. will it make your customers better .. no, let’s be honest, it wont
It comes down to this letting agent fans .... ‘Do you opt for more, or instead, do you opt for better?’
Surely, better is better ..... than more?
